Agilist, as I understand from your post, the "spirit" is consciousness, and a body without consciousness is not a living being. There is no consciousness without a body (or bodies), but if we talk about souls, which you don't believe in, that's a different question...
For example, a body without a soul and a soul without a body can exist, while a body without consciousness cannot...
