"Masala" translates to "spices," so they add everything they have on hand, I think. In reality, each family has its own recipe and its own set of spices.
Our hostess, without much fuss, makes it from a store-bought mix "for masala-tea": small cardamom, large cardamom, green cardamom, cinnamon, ground black pepper, cloves, nutmeg, coriander, dill, anise, bay leaf.
Plus, she separately adds cardamom, cinnamon, pepper, and star anise.
And in the one they make and sell on the street, they also add ground ginger (at least, I could taste ginger in it).
