I don't understand why there's so much fuss about the Training Ground. IMO, it encourages players against Haven to not delay and to eliminate the enemy as quickly as possible. After all, for a decent upgrade, you need: a) a reasonably well-developed town; b) a hero with a decent skill level; c) a huge amount of gold. Even with a 40% price reduction (for building it), upgrading units is expensive. In the early stages, there isn't enough money. And initially, Haven is completely weak – even with a large number of peasants, which can be easily blocked by gargoyles or something else. And later, it's desirable to reduce the enemy's income as much as possible so that they simply don't have enough money to upgrade
