Leading with Mephala and having a "potentially useless" skill, Zorkost, are completely different things. In my opinion, I would choose Mephala for a box with 5k experience.
Just for fun, I checked the first level-up for Tazar (I won't bother with the second one, as it would take much more work).
earth, air, tactics, logistics, offense - basically a standard set. Also, wisdom, water, and intelligence to avoid ruining the tree. Everything else is garbage, in my opinion.
Logistics: 29/255
Earth: 7/255
Air: 1/255 (if air is offered, it means we already know everything about this tree. We can't refuse it, because it will lead to garbage later)
Tactics: 17/255
Offense: 7/255
Total: 61/255 = 24%. That is, in every fourth case, we get a top-tier skill right away! In the remaining 76%, we reach level three, where we can get either garbage or a top-tier skill. In addition, several skills from the "so-so" category appear there: Pathfinding, Ranged Attack, Leadership, Wisdom, Water, Intelligence, Resistance.
Completely useless: Scouting (although it might be useful for some), Diplomacy (unless it's Anarchy), Navigation, Mysticism, Eagle Eye, Ballistics, Literacy, Economics, Luck, Artillery (definitely garbage for Tazar), Training, Magic, First Aid.
For fun, you can check the probability of a combination of these skills, but honestly, it would take at least an hour.
P.S.: Leadership > Resistance, IMO.
