Besides the too-simple version – a flower-mute flower?
I have one version so far (not a solution, but a version).
Among other things, in “Les Singularitez…” Thévet describes in detail the process of collecting and smoking tobacco by the Indians. The monk brought tobacco seeds to France, grew them, and called it “Angoumois herb” (French: herbe angoumoisine). Thévet was the first Frenchman to cultivate tobacco (c).

I’ll say right away, there are many inconsistencies in this version; tobacco and mahorka are almost the same, but slightly different. But even that’s not the point; France doesn’t seem to be involved at all. If you take a roundabout route from the hint, it’s practically impossible to go back.
