Can someone explain why the Shaman burned the Mafam in the role of the defender and how the warlord is involved in the attack, considering that, according to the beginning of the description, he used his own spell on himself?

The warlord slept soundly all night, keeping his sword near his bed to be ready to repel any attack. But to his surprise, the attack wasn't directed at him. A nondescript-looking man ran out of an alley and stabbed him in the side with a dagger, then disappeared. Fortunately, the blow hit the chainmail, not reaching its target.
