To prevent Nicolas from escaping, you need to capture the War Shackles to stop him from fleeing. The Shackles are located near the prophet, to the west. They are guarded by spectral dragons.
He wasn't trying to escape from the battle – I meant he was running away along the path from Faelan :) And he didn't even try to resist – he calmly surrendered.
