My demon appeared at the same time as the heroes exited the one-way portal.
They hit and almost flawlessly stunned the enemy.
I also blocked the gates, but they marched through the breach in the wall, and there were enough misses when stunning, so an unanswered attack was a lifesaver (I only struggled with the berserkers). I'm not entirely sure how you managed to eliminate the archers in this way (my archers' attacks did negligible damage). Leadership was developed similarly.
