Tactics are useful, but only when you're not a mage and your army is stronger! Otherwise, a close-quarters battle starts immediately, and it becomes more difficult to use any group magic – you'll end up hitting your own troops, and they'll destroy your army. I generally don't use it very often, only when necessary.
