Didn't the open beta for Heroes Online start in July? While AoW was officially released back in the spring.
The game itself was announced back in August 2012 (half a year before the announcement of AoW 3), and the announcement also mentioned flanking attacks. So, it's more likely that AoW3 borrowed them, rather than the other way around.
