If the opponents agree, that's fine. But not as a requirement. And regarding non-standard timers: this is a minor issue that could have been easily resolved in a private message, rather than posting on the forum. That's why I'm online almost 24/7. The classic 4-minute timer has been tested in tournaments, but 6+4+1 has not. It would be good if 2sm4d(3) was played on this timer with someone from the well-known players, not necessarily strong ones. I would talk to them and get their opinion on the timer. I cannot allow untested templates and timers in the tournament.
