Snow White
The chaotic noise outside her room woke the eleven-year-old girl. First, she looked out the window and, seeing nothing but the night darkness, realized that she had woken up earlier than usual. Still rubbing her eyes, the little sylph went into the living room of her family's modest dwelling. Her mother was running around like a whirlwind, tidying the house, decorating it in every way, and overseeing the preparation of numerous dishes she was making for today.
— Oh, forgive me, sunshine, I woke you up, — she said tenderly, noticing her daughter in the doorway. Selena hugged herself by the shoulders; it was a cold night. — Vaelr, please light the fireplace.
While her brother fulfilled the request, Selena looked with appetite at all the delicacies her mother was preparing. Usually they ate much less, making exceptions only on special days. — Is today some kind of holiday?
— You really are slow, Snow White, — her brother and many of her friends in the village called her by this nickname because of the unusual color of her hair. — Uncle Berengar arrives today!
How could she have forgotten about this man's arrival? And although he was not a sylph, Berengar had once been her father's best friend, and even after his death, he remained a good friend to the family.
The little village on the edge of Tervert was useless to anyone except those who called it home, so it was no surprise that the few guests in these lands were welcomed warmly.
— Today I will leave this hole and finally be able to see the world with my own eyes, — Vaelr always loved stories about travelers and knights; sometimes he imagined himself in their place. — Berengar will take me with him and I will become as strong as he is!
— Is that true, mama? — the girl asked with a certain sadness; she loved her brother and did not want him to leave. To her regret, the woman nodded affirmatively. — But why?
— A boy needs to be raised by a man, — from her mother's look, it was clear that such a decision had been difficult for her. — I am sure that under Berengar's guidance, Vaelr will grow into a wonderful person.
— That's right, Snow White, this house is no place for a future Knight!
— Well, get lost, you idiot! — Selena slammed the door and returned to her room. She lay in bed and tried to fall asleep. It would have been better if this man hadn't come at all. Maybe he was her father's friend, but not hers. Even his ears aren't like ours. In such reflections, she lay until dawn. A heavy hand knocked on the house door. "It's Berengar!" Vaelr exclaimed joyfully and jumped to the doors. Childhood curiosity played a cruel trick on the little girl, and she finally decided to meet the guest. The first thing she saw when she left her small room was how her brother's head flew from his shoulders and rolled across the living room, leaving a trail of bloody prints behind it. Two tall humanoids towered over the dead boy; blood-stained steel glistened in the rays of the morning sun, and her mother's hysterical scream rang through the room like the music of a broken violin. As if getting rid of an annoying sound, a green troglodyte killed her too. Just like that, the two people who made up the world of the little sylph ceased to exist. Selena stood paralyzed and thought of nothing; time seemed to stop for her.
Without imperial permission, sylphs were not allowed to raise an army to protect their lands, let alone a small, useless village in the east.
For some time, the orcs paid no attention to the petrified girl; they were too preoccupied with the slaughter of those few defenders who found the courage to resist the attackers. When almost everyone was dead and all valuables had been looted, the two green humanoids returned for her. One of them grabbed the girl by the hair and lifted her like a kitten by the scruff of its neck. Perhaps she was destined to die that morning along with everyone she knew, but it did not happen: a sharp blade of someone's sword appeared from the orc's chest. The blade passed through the heart, so the troglodyte died instantly, and Selena fell to her knees. The warrior freed his two-handed sword from the green flesh and immediately dealt several hacking blows to the other troglodyte. He also died almost immediately.
The warrior turned out to be Berengar. "Forgive me, child, I should have come sooner," he said with bitterness, pressing the girl close to him. They left the village and returned only the next day, once the orcs had gone away. Berengar buried the mother and Vaelr in the village cemetery near the father's grave.
Selena was still deeply shocked and did not fully understand what was happening, so when the man told her to follow him, she obeyed silently. For the next eight years, Berengar replaced her father; they traveled throughout the world and engaged in his usual business. Besides being an outstanding warrior, her mentor was also a doctor and helped many people on his way. Sometimes he provided help for free, sometimes for a roof over his head and a warm dinner, sometimes for money, and sometimes for a return favor. People, however, more often required his ability to swing a sword than to heal wounds.
One day Selena asked her mentor to teach her his mastery, not only medical but also military.
— I want one like that, — she said, pointing to the heavy sword on his back. Berengar laughed and replied that it was too large for her. When he realized that such an answer did not satisfy the girl, he placed the sword in her hands. Naturally, she lacked the strength even to simply hold it. The man, however, did not refuse her request and from that day taught her the art of wielding a one-handed sword.
...
Eight long years after the tragic events of that night, Selena and her mentor found themselves back in Tervert, in Ville-de-Roi. It was at this time that Etienne the Uncrowned, heir to the throne, returned to this city. He intended to free the sylphs from the invaders and drive the latter away. And although he died, in a sense he succeeded; the Yoru were either killed or fled, and the Order of Dawn took command of the sylph liberation movement.
And although Selena had not been in her homeland since childhood, the Magister's speech in the city square clearly inspired her, while Berengar treated it with coldness.
— Poor boy, — the man spoke of Severin, the king's son, — he not only lost his father but also ended up at the epicenter of all this chaos. The Yoru will not give up so easily; much more blood will be shed in these lands and many good people will perish.
— I will join these sylphs, — nineteen-year-old Selena stated confidently. Seeing her mentor's puzzled look, she explained, — if it weren't for the restrictions that the empire imposes on our people, my home village might never have become a victim of that massacre.
— That is a strong argument, — Berengar agreed. — But are you sure? Real war is not at all like what the bards sing about, — the girl smiled sadly, — Snow White, you think you've seen everything, but...
— Please, Berengar, understand me correctly. I do not regret in the slightest how I spent the last eight years. My life would probably have been much more boring if it weren't for the orc attack from the east and meeting you, and nevertheless... I do not want such things to continue in the future. — Her mentor had his own reasons why he did not want to get involved in any war, so Selena was prepared from the start that she would have to continue her path alone. She bowed low. — Words cannot express how grateful I am for everything you have done for me.
— Well, my girl, it remains only for me to respect your wish and, with a heavy heart, allow you to step onto your own path...
Selena said goodbye to her guardian and joined the ranks of the sylph militia, hoping to contribute her part to the liberation of Tervert. Thus began a new chapter of her life, filled with all sorts of events, both joyful and sorrowful. For some time she was glad of her decision to go to war; she felt like part of something larger, feeling that she was working for a noble cause. The sylphs managed to liberate most of Tervert, but at some point the advance north stopped and the course of the war froze in place, while both the sylphs and Yoru continued to perish, others taking their place and falling dead following their comrades. Mothers grieved over lost children; many of them had a bright future full of joy and happiness awaiting them, but now they all lie in the earth, knowing no peace. To top it all off, the radical methods of the Order of Daylight became more apparent, and at some point Selena, without noticing it, changed her attitude not only toward this war, but toward life in general. People live, none know their lot, none understand what they want and what they do not. Hatred burns in people's hearts, greed and envy flicker in their eyes, their lips spray poison, chaos reigns in the mind and there is no peace. People blindly follow the light, not knowing where it will lead them. She herself did not know what she wanted from life. During her eight-year journey, she liked helping people and seeing smiles on their faces, she liked waking up in the mornings and listening to the birds sing, she liked simply living without worries. But where did all that go? Selena felt lost, but one thing she knew for sure — she did not want to continue participating in this war, so one night she disappeared without a trace, leaving like the last deserter. After some time, the roads of life will lead her aboard a ship of the Kro Empire. Perhaps this is far from the most sensible decision in the long term and she will still come to regret it, but at the present moment she was ready to face all the difficulties and obstacles that might arise on her path.
