That's not what I meant – it's just that the human mind is structured in such a way that you see what you can see, what you're aware of...
So, you were asleep, then you looked out the window, and what did you see? - A FLYING SAUCER! You saw something incomprehensible, and what was the first thing that came to your mind? - A FLYING SAUCER!!! If, instead of UFOs, another idea was widespread in society, for example, the idea of a MAGICAL FLYING GNOME, then you would most likely have seen that instead!;)
There's an interesting theory that in the Middle Ages, during the time of the Inquisition, it was quite possible for a person to encounter what we call the supernatural (devil, demon, angel). The point was that people were infinitely sure of their existence, and their consciousness focused on them, as on completely ordinary everyday things; it materialized the supernatural into a form that was easy to understand. For a person of that era, it was commonplace to talk to a demon, and then tell their neighbor about it, whom they saw just as clearly as the demon.
