I'm not a VC player, but I've seen some games there and GR psychs are valued no less than phoenixes, and considering the possibility of starting with Moner, they are actually the main stack. In general, Conflux isn't an outsider on any template anyway, so I see no point in buffing it.

Upgraded units are significantly cooler than non-upgraded ones — damage 15-25 versus 10-20, which is 33% more. Not to mention speed, stats, and health. Also, non-upgraded units have a penalty against undead creatures (undead, golems), which can sometimes be critical.

The only weak point for Magic players is Dragon Utopia; they get chewed up there regardless of life steal, but otherwise they are very decent fighters, and the upgrade is made at the first possible opportunity.
