The execution of Aurelius's plan didn't quite go as he expected: the little man turned out to be too agile and quick for him. There was no way to escape quietly now. From then on, he acted on instinct: using his immense strength, he broke the bars and then single-handedly took down the guards. Although he was now hindered by ordinary townspeople who were still around, he managed to free the other prisoners. Aurelius put Varus on his shoulders and ran away with the other four prisoners. Anil, Berndt von Krueger, and Ansgar stayed behind to cover their retreat. They fled westward, and they encountered only a few opponents along the way (apparently, most of the town's inhabitants had gathered in the center for some reason). At one point during their escape, the former prisoners realized that no one was following them anymore. This was a signal to stop and wait for the others. However, after a considerable amount of time, no one returned.
