IMHO, cheats are necessary; sometimes they make the game much easier, for example, when you just want to relax and play on a large scale without any stress (e.g., 10,000 black dragons) or simply see what a particular artifact is like, or when the game is really getting boring and it's no longer interesting to play normally, as everything has been played through countless times.
