I caught the Diplomat, lost a couple of times, but the prospects were excellent - several heroes with Diplomacy, all with Town Portal, the entire map was revealed, all that was left was to find a Dungeon.

I confirm. We played a full random game with castles/heroes. My opponent "ate" all the restarts, giving me a great chance to win, but for some reason that I don't even understand now, we ended up playing Tower against Conflux... the cartographer misled me right at the castle gate...
As a result, although I had a decent start, standing still with mini-cons led to the situation where wherever I went, there were enemy birds.
