Regarding skills, I try not to take Luck and Leadership, as there are usually many simple artifacts that increase morale and luck. There are also many artifacts that remove these bonuses. On an XL map, it can be frustrating to invest in Leadership and Luck skills, which will be nullified during a battle with the AI or another player. I prefer the following skills: Logistics, Armor, Archery, Diplomacy, Wisdom, Earth Magic, Tactics, Magic Resistance. I also try not to take Attack skill - Attack is not the strongest point for a Ranger, and a 15% increase in damage on the Expert level won't make a big difference. I think it's better to invest in defense - it's already at a high level for creatures and the hero (Ranger), and with the Armor skill, it makes the units even more invulnerable.
I don't always take Archery (Fast Warriors or Tactics make Archery a useless skill), but Attack is useful, and 15% is not that insignificant.
