Played terribly, but the heroes that appeared allowed me to win.

I had the opposite experience; I played well, but no heroes with overpowered skills appeared, and I didn't level up diplomacy for anyone. In the very end, Kreg managed to get a level 5 air magic hat and some stats, but it was too late.
