I ended up with 2nd level in the castle, Wystan arrived and I was given 1000 gold from the start. On day one I found a village, also with 2nd level. I also took an external dwelling of cows, but misjudged the strength and lost 12 lizards.
By the end of the first week I took another barbarian village, but had very little gold overall, didn't even buy meat. I snagged a tasty pandora's box with +5k experience for almost no guard. On 117 I found another lizard den.
On the 2nd week I had 60+ of them. Upgraded them, went into the adjacent zone, crossed it in 2 turns, picking up a flail +4. I rushed to kill the opponent, grabbing an external dwelling of cavalry along the way (the bastards caused morale and I lost my entire stack of gnolls). I took another pandora's box for 5k experience.

At the final battle I had:
6 cows
2 cavalry
62 lizards (upg)
a few snakes and gnolls.
Wystan was 7 9 - - with Expert Defense, Archery, Offense, Logistics and Basic Tactics.

I caught the opponent on his last movement point, made a huge blunder in the final battle and almost lost. However, against those stats and the massive amount of meat, the mage with only 1 meteor shower had nothing to catch!
