Yes, the bonus from the Lion set is still active; only the Dragon set's bonus has been disabled. Regarding your strategy, you did everything correctly – Necromancers are the easiest to defeat, and it will indeed make further development easier. As far as I know, the strong direct attack bonus can also be removed.
