1. I don't think "kitchen" is the clue. Since it appears twice in the text, it's likely part of the narrative:

They went into the kitchen and sat down at the table.

and accordingly

the contents of his head ended up on the kitchen table...

So, it's more likely related to a check.
For now, I've found the following, but I'm not sure.
