Das had a Papal build: diplomacy, earth, air, and necromancy. After the liches appeared in his army, Max decided not to delay.

It wasn't just the appearance of liches, but the collection of the King of the Undead's cloak. He couldn't handle 50+ diamond creatures on turn 2, and he couldn't go on the offensive. There were no prospects for an equal opponent, and he could see that he was in a superior position.
