Well, yes, Ukraine buys gas from Russia, and Russia buys Ukrainian goods. The more such connections there are: "I owe" - "I am owed" in economic, cultural, and sports terms, with different countries, the more reliable and independent the state's position becomes. A country with many such connections cannot be subjugated. This is painful for the entire global community.
Alternatively, one could lower the iron curtain, switch to a natural economy, and create a neo-feudalism. That would also be independence.
