I might be wrong, but as far as I know, Koreans don't consider themselves to be different peoples, whether they are from the North or the South. Different countries, but one nation. And most Ukrainians believe this, and the percentage of those who do is increasing every year, as the Soviet generation gradually fades away.
As for historical examples, the first one that comes to mind is the Portuguese and the Spanish.
