Twi'leks are one of the most exotic races in the galaxy, possessing two long, snake-like appendages that grow from the sides of their head and hang down to their waist. These prehensile appendages, called "lekku" or "head-tails," are highly developed organs of communication, cognition, and sensory pleasure. The skin pigments of Twi'leks give them a variety of colors from birth, ranging from yellow and pale pink like humans, to red, blue, green, and purple. Sometimes, even grayish shades can be found. The homeworld of the Twi'leks is Ryloth; the period of Ryloth's rotation around its axis coincides with its period of rotation around the sun, so one half of the planet is perpetually bathed in scorching sunlight, while the other half experiences eternal cold night. On Ryloth, the Twi'leks established vast underground cities to escape the scorching sun. Hence the legend that the skin of their ancestors changed as a result of ultraviolet burns. Twi'leks adhere to a family clan system of governance, organized around a number of major clans, each consisting of five members. The main clan makes all decisions concerning the life of a single underground city. When one of the clan members dies, the remaining four are exiled to the Blinding Lands, and a new generation of clan leaders takes its rightful place. Twi'leks worship a single female deity. On Ryloth, Twi'leks speak the Twi'lek language, which combines words and subtle movements of their appendages. If they wish, they can communicate while maintaining complete secrecy using their flexible appendages. As a rule, Twi'leks are not aggressive. They usually prefer to achieve their goals through cunning rather than force. Because Ryloth is poorly defended, the Twi'leks are constantly subjected to raids by alien enslavers. Twi'leks reach a height of 2 meters. The main export items of Ryloth are the narcotic spice "ryll" and Twi'lek women, who are popular for their ability to dance seductively.
