I started with the rules, as expected... and I was shocked! Bureaucracy has reached even Heroes! You have to save every time, deal with bugged passages, keep saves until the end of the tournament. Everything is so serious! And I just wanted to play with someone for fun - without any rules! Can you play clean Heroes 3 (without mods, patches, or expansions)? We created a map, chose castles, and let's go! Is that possible? And if so, what version of Heroes 3 do I need? I have the "complete collection"; will it work?) In the properties of the exe file, the product version is 4.0.

All the rules (well, or almost all :D) that exist on this forum are not taken out of thin air; they directly affect the balance of the game. The points about saving games also didn't appear from nowhere; there are controversial situations, for example, in tournament games, when it cannot be unequivocally said whether one opponent violated any rule. In these cases, the aforementioned saves are reviewed by the tournament judge. You can play "without any rules" using the "Anarchy" template (I assume you haven't heard about templates either).
