Historical experience shows that in order to maintain independence in a densely populated area with many neighbors, a clear national identity is needed – a unique language, a unique set of names/surnames, and distinctive physical features. In other words, it should be easy to draw a line between "us" and "them." And there should be a strong xenophobia towards foreigners in their area of residence.

For example, the Kurds have considered themselves a separate nation for many years and are fighting to restore Kurdistan. And now, they have every chance of doing so.
