I believe that I don't know what happened, who freed themselves from whom, and who paid tribute to whom. It just so happened that a continuous written history can only be traced back to the 17th century, and what happened before that is complete darkness. Most written sources from earlier times only come to the attention of historians in the 18th and 19th centuries, when they were discovered. Or "discovered" - the forgery of ancient texts and artifacts was widespread at that time. Archaeology can only confirm the level of cultural and technological development, but it cannot confirm economic and political relations; in this matter, one has to rely on written sources. Or not rely on them - see above. Specifically regarding the Battle of Kulikovo, the problem is that archaeologists have not confirmed the fact of a large battle in that area. This means that either the battle was not large, or the battle was in a different place, or there was no battle at all. Which of these "or" is more correct - I don't know.
