What are you surprised about? For you, as developed and intellectual people, the idea of zombification seems absurd. A herd always needs a leader, and the herd doesn't care where he leads them; we just want to break away from the herd, but it drags us along with it.
Even in a pack of wolves, there are often cases where the strongest male refuses to be the leader simply because he doesn't want to think about the pack; he likes it when others think for him.
