I just don't understand the methods of the protesters – do they really think that spending a few days in this crowd will change anything?

A lot can be achieved through peaceful protest, without any bloodshed. What will happen if even 10% of the population goes on strike? Many enterprises, including state-owned ones, will be unable to function, and the rest of the people, seeing the scale of what is happening, will stop being afraid and will join in. When this reaches a critical mass, current politicians will begin to join the people, realizing that there is no point in being enemies. And when, in the end, the troops join in, as happened during the August Coup in 1991 – that will be a complete victory, and Yanukovych will have nowhere to go.
