Surprisingly, a unicorn is preferable in melee combat compared to a griffin. The bird-dog is more suitable for long-range raids into the enemy's rear. For reference: it's easier for a vampire to take health from a griffin than from a unicorn. Neither can retaliate against vampires, so an endless counterattack won't help in a battle against them. The numerical advantage is on the side of the unicorns.
I'm not arguing about who is better, but considering a specific case. In a battle of mages, unicorns, for example, cause more losses than bird-dogs.
