Few people know the rules completely... I had a game where I played with full random (or cheated) and had 112 resources. On the first generation, I didn't have a road leading out of my castle. I said it was a technical resource issue, and he said I needed to spend 111. I said I only had 112, and that it was a technical issue because I didn't have 111. The person insulted me, saying I was a noob and should learn the rules. In the end, we agreed that if I had to spend 111, he would win, and if not, I would win. I thought that if the growth didn't affect the outcome, I could attack, but it turned out that you can't attack castles with a growth bonus at all, even if they are empty.
