And the piles of wood are guarded by monsters because it seemed to me that wood would be scarce.

It's fine – there are still two hard battles ahead, plus by the time you reach the Knight, they'll have taken all the towns.
Wood isn't scarce anyway – there are markets and everything.
Especially towards the end of the map – everything is already converted.
