Could you provide more details on how to return to the sunken temple? I couldn't manage it.

You return to the temple via a different path.
I don't remember exactly, but there's either a descent or a portal to a neighboring room where the sword is located.
And you can no longer access the starting location; the adjacent doors are closed.
