A Thief is useful for gathering resources and artifacts in areas that are difficult to access, and for performing sabotage.
However, to make him gain experience independently, you need to level him up first (so he can defeat monsters of the second level), and it's a waste to include him in your army or spend resources on him.
But the larger the map, the more useful he becomes.
In the end, you can assign him a lot of menial tasks:
- capturing mines
- transporting the army
- clearing out newly spawned locations (like harpy nests, etc.)
- sailing the seas
- running errands at markets, etc.
- he can even replace a caravan.
