I have the Complete Edition, but I don’t like it precisely because of some of the new content. I don’t use the map generator; I’d rather never have seen the Conflux; all the campaigns and maps added before version 1.4 are fine. That’s why I asked about an update that fixes many serious flaws, such as the ability to hire units in a more varied way and leave guards at resource locations.

Oh my god. I see. Well, I understand that it’s pointless to try to change your mind.
The only thing I can do is suggest trying the HD MOD. Have you heard of it? It’s not a mod like Wog or some other nonsense. It’s a mod that allows you to:
1. run the game in high resolution (instead of the standard 800*600),
2. fix game bugs such as: duplicated heroes, grayed-out cities, uncontrolled AI control of your hero, and many others,
3. transfer armies and artifacts from one hero to another with a single button,
4. most importantly: it doesn’t change the balance. It is completely consistent with the classic game.

But it only works with The Shadow of Death or the Complete Edition. You can find the already installed version here
