Connection between Heroes of Might and Magic II and III.

What happened to Roland and his son Nicholas (or will I find out about this as the plot of part 3 unfolds?)

The story doesn't mention anything about Nicholas in part 3, but you can play as Roland and his wife Catherine in some scenarios from Armageddon's Blade.
