Zdob mentioned it earlier, but I'll repeat it anyway.
The combination: Amulet of Fear or Mask of Terror + Halberd of the Agile Guard.
And that's it! You can use a hero, alone on the battlefield, against melee units without mind immunity. For example, against Orcish Mages, they try to attack, but the hero strikes them first, inflicting fear, and the Orcish Mages retreat. The hero's turn: he strikes, they retreat again, and so on. (Note: Pikemen can deflect the first attack, and the hero's archers can shoot them before he reaches them.) Otherwise, that's all. I used this to level up a hero to level 60. He was originally a Rogue, and camouflage is effective.

1 Griffin Armor; 2 Halberd of the Agile Guard; 3 Mask of Terror; 4 Robe of the Guard; 5 Ring of Regeneration; 6 Ring of Life; 7 Barbarian Club; 8 Well, for the hands, it's up to you. (PS: For a Barbarian!)
Hmm... with this set, a Mage can even go against Black Dragons, if the level isn't too low. Although resurrection potions solve that.
