On turn 111, I discovered that from the spawn point, there was only one path to the opponent, with a group of 49 Medusas. The secondary hero was probably somewhere far away in the snow. I scouted part of this impassable terrain. These facts strongly urged me to take a rest. But the arriving Alamar and the Medusa stack convinced me otherwise. The plan was to level up the mage on the first turn and break the opponent's main town on the second. Therefore, I didn't place anyone else in the castle except for the Medusas, and Alamar cleared all the chests for experience. The chance of him getting the Earth skill was high, and I was 99% sure of it. But apparently, I crossed paths with a very malevolent deity that day, because there's no other explanation: the mage, whom I leveled up to level 7 at a spawn point where there's nothing interesting (again), was offered Water, Attack, Tactics, Pathfinding, and Logistics twice. These are the rarest skills offered to him. No Earth, no Intelligence, no Magic (god, this is really magic).
As a result, instead of breaking the main town as planned, he headed towards the snow, and there was nowhere else to go. And this was my fatal mistake: I should have gone to the treasure through 40+ un-neutralized Medusas, although there's also a long path there. In the end, the opponent caught up with me there – I lost almost all my troops and had to pay a ransom. Then there were two chances to take his main town (both times I messed up), and I got the Book of Fire three days later than expected – also a good chance for my mage.
Looking at the map revealed the following: 1) He is closer to both treasure locations than I am. 2) He is much closer to both secondary towns, including mine (it's just a few days' journey from his main town, just a fat guard), than I am. In short, this was the last time I convinced myself that with inconvenient logistics on the map, no matter who tries to persuade me, I should rest.
And now, to the point. It's clear that whatever was generated, I am the only one to blame, especially since I had a legitimate rest available.
