There, in tactics, the auto-battle moves the troops forward as much as possible (as usual), and then, if the enemies reach, that's it, and if they don't reach, then the option to retreat appears. In your case, on the expert tactics map, the pikeman was moved as far forward as possible, which allowed the vampires to reach and kill him, so the option to retreat was not offered :) you just need to be attentive and read what the quick combat suggests; I don't think this is a unique case with such a breakdown...
