So, as I understand it, it's the same double elimination, but with random pairings for each round and with possible draws? Why complicate things when you can just do a double elimination.

With a double elimination, calendar time is used less efficiently - there are more downtimes waiting for an opponent, more downtimes when an opponent withdraws, and there is also a strict need to finish one round before the next one begins.
