If you compare everyone only to the leader, the meaning of the other results is lost. If there is one player who will always outperform everyone else, what is the point of comparing only to him? I already know that I am inferior to him. But if I have outperformed someone in a tournament, or he has outperformed me, then I am much more interested in comparing myself to him, rather than to the unattainable leader. And here, the non-linear aspect will only say one thing: we are both playing worse than the leader. So what?
