I had the same problem! :( It happened specifically on large, custom-made maps that were rich in treasures. It was quite annoying because I had to regularly "discard" extra artifacts to my other heroes and redistribute them among them so that they wouldn't have their backpacks overflow either. As for its capacity, I don't know either.
