It all comes down to personal preference. Some people enjoy playing as Necropolis and like having a large army, while others prefer to defeat opponents with smaller forces, even when the odds seem stacked against them. This is something that mages excel at, although Necropolis can also use magic, as can anyone else, but the specialization ultimately lies with the mage faction.
