But I don't think you should dig too deep trying to understand what a person means and responding to every jab.

If a person defends beliefs that correspond to reality, then they can be understood. But the motive behind it is very important.

But defending false, mistaken beliefs, just because they are my own, dear beliefs, is extremely unwise.

I already know my own opinion; I want to know the opinion of another person – what it is based on. That's why I ask questions, so that the person has the opportunity to share their vision.
