Showing off might not be the point here; sometimes, people simply enjoy owning certain things. And if you had the money, you enjoyed the opportunity and desire to acquire that item, and then you did, that's a normal and good thing. A working person won't have thoughts like "it's a shame to spend a thousand rubles" on something, unless they work for a pittance and a bowl of noodles, and are more surviving than living.
A student with pocket money from their parents or from putting up flyers might feel deprived, but they don't need to live on that money; what else would they spend it on if not something they desire? On beer and McDonald's?
Wise people say that you shouldn't even bother counting other people's money.
