So, what were the grateful people supposed to say? The decision is clearly controversial, and it's not at all obvious why it was made, and the boss is even explaining it as "I decided to do it – deal with it."

All that needed to be said was, "Yes, I'll think about it; this isn't the final version," and there would have been fewer complaints.
