Shades of Darkness - Discussion

Well, what kind of shadows can darkness have...? - in my opinion, this immediately falls apart, and that's why there's a common expression - "shades of gray," but "shades of darkness" doesn't really work. There's the expression " грани тьмы " - meaning the boundary, and "грани" - is probably an association with some kind of facet of the substance "darkness."
