I, in principle, am not against removing points for spam and off-topic posts. It's normal that a person can get carried away in a conversation; that's what communication is for. If the topic has completely gone off track, then that's what moderators are for – to move or delete the spam and off-topic posts.
There is usually no malicious intent, which means it's unfair to punish.
